The first time i had a bowl of Açai was while i was sun-bathing on the beaches of Ilha grande which is an island in Brazil. Thereafter i was hooked and i made sure i got my daily dose of Açai without fail. In Brazil, Açai cafes, fruit shops and natural food eateries are on every street corner. These serve everything you could imagine – Açai juices, bowls of frozen Açai with fruit and toppings, Açai cheesecake and even Açai syrup to use on ice cream. i found myself addicted to frozen Açai with granola and strawberry slices.
I returned back from South America last year and haven’t been able to find Açai back in India. Before i travelled and moved to Dubai i noticed an Instagram post with a large bowl of Açai and that bought me to The Açai Spot only a few days after i landed here. Only goes to show how much i really missed my daily juices and especially my Açai. Travelling is a true adventure for the senses and I’m glad I’m able to find something that reminds me of my Brazilian summers here in Dubai.
So, what exactly is an Açai bowl? Most people are familiar with the Açai berry, a small fruit found in South America . Properly pronounced “ah-sigh-ee,” it’s been hailed as some kind of superfruit, with more antioxidants than blueberries. A rich purple palm fruit indigenous to the Amazon rainforest. For hundreds of years, these small dark berries have been integral to the diet of native Amazon people. The berries are packed with amino acids, as well as vitamins A, B, C and E and minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, copper and zinc. The fruit perishes quickly after being picked, so to help preserve its goodness it is often made into acai berry juice, supplements or powder, which is often whizzed into a smoothie.
None of that would matter if Açai berries didn’t taste good. The flavour falls somewhere between a raspberry and blackberry that is, when sweetened. On their own, Acai berries are too bitter to eat. While Açai berries have been all the rage in Brazil for quite a while and may seem like a hipster craze, Dubai is soon to pick up on this simple, filling, energizing and very delicious summer hack.
I love the casual café setting at The Açai Spot they even had little leaflets on the tables explaining exactly what Açai berries were and their different benefits to the body. They offer different variations on the bowls. You can get such toppings as strawberries, mango, avocado, blueberries, pineapple and chocolate. I decided to dive straight into my original sin, the Açai bowl with strawberries and granola. This was more than a dessert for my mouth; it was a visual treat as well. My first spoonful of it brought back memories of Brazil and introduced my palate to the icy texture. Açai isn’t nearly as smooth as ice cream, but is a little bit smoother than a slushy, but hella lot yummier.
Recommended treats here are the salad in a jar and avocado toast. i would conclude by saying that this cafe is the perfect way to beat the heat and enjoy this icy treat while playing board games with your friends or by simply reading a book. Each bowl is unique, the key ingredients being the Açai and each bowl is also quite drool worthy to bring you back for more!
